Social Studies homework will vary according to the topics being studied and the daily activities.

Because homework is assigned from most other classes, i.e. reading, science, and math, social studies and language arts homework will mainly focus on any assignments that have not been completed in class that day.

Upcoming Project:

Students will be completing a social studies/language arts project towards the end of the first quarter.  They will create an "All About" Book from the viewpoint of a historical figure.  Please look for additional information coming home within the next few weeks with your child about details of this project.

Students have a daily routine when entering the LA/SS classroom.

They come in the room, retrieve their binder from its bin, write their homework in their planners, and then begin daily grammar work.

Students complete daily grammar work each morning, which is then turned in on Friday for a weekly practice and assessment grade.  I do not give multiple grades for grammar because I believe students need to practice the grammar extensively before they are graded on it.

Writing assignments will be integrated into social studies, such as through the "All About" Book project.

*Please bare with me while this site is under construction.  I am attempting to create hyperlinks in order to provide more information, but am still learning.*

Each day the class participates in center activities to scaffold their skills in reading. We are also completing a read aloud in class of the book Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.  This is novel deals with many different themes, such as abandonment and segregation that we have many class discussions about.

Please discuss what they have learned in class. When you show interest in what your child is doing, they will become more engaged. Ask them questions about the story. Make them think hard about the characters, sequence of events, plot, and main idea.
