  • What did the boy say when he was told that he forgot everything he learned?  Answer:  Can you repeat the question?

Problem Solving

Occasionally we will have an optional brain-teasing math problem or a riddle to solve.  Please be able to show me how you arrived at the answer and bring it to school with you by Thursday of the week that it appears on our web page.   Parents or other adults may help!  S-T-R-E-T-C-H those brains!

Read the clue Draw the objects in the correct order.  Write their names below the picture.

1.  Kristin's town had 3 days of very different weather.  It snowed before it rained.  The sun shone all day the middle day.

2.  Jana has 4 crayons on her desk.  The red crayon does not touch the green one.  The blue one is before the yellow one.  The yellow one is last.  The green crayon is behind the blue one.

3.  Julio has a row of stickers on his binder.  The smile sticker does not touch the clover or bug.  The dog and bug stickers touch the heart.  The heart sticker is in the middle.  The clover is in front of the dog.

Something To Think About

You might want to try using these questions with your children as a springboard for logical thinking.  Please don't be satisfied with a "yes" or "no" answer from them.  Have fun!

A.  Of what use are your fingernails?

B.  Name some musical instruments that you can play while you are singing.

C.  Do you always shed tear when you cry?

Writing Tips

1.  Encourage your children to talk about ideas and jot down these ideas before writing.

2.  Be sure to give your children lots of positive encouragement about their writing.

3.  Ask your children what they did in writing class today and discuss what they're writing.

4.  Encourage your children to keep a journal of personal or family events.

5.  After you and your child have read a story together, have your child write a summary of the story, including setting, characters, the problem, and the solution to the problem.

6.  Review the planning structure for a narrative piece (story) of writing.  A narrative consists of at least 5 paragraphs.   The following is the planning tool that we use for a narrative:

 Grabber-get the reader's attention

Setting-where and when does the story take place

Characters-introduce who is in the story

 Problem (Conflict)

Action 1 (Event) -actions that lead to the solution.

Action 2 (Event)-can have more than 2 actions

Solution (Resolution)-solve the problem

Take Away-what was learned from the story
