THE EAGLE FLYER
A Newsletter for the Family and Friends of Hobe Sound Elementary School
March 2010
Providing a safe learning environment for all of our students is of the utmost concern for our entire faculty and staff. Recently, I have become increasingly concerned about some areas of need. Therefore, I have sought the advice of our school district safety officer as well as local law enforcement to provide suggestions on our current practices. The following procedures are a result of this collaboration and will be put into place immediately at our school. Please take a moment to review our updated procedures for arrival, dismissal and parking on campus.
1. Morning Arrival - Students arriving by car must use the eastern parking lot, car loop. At no time may students be dropped off on sidewalks along Bridge Road, Gomez, or outside of the car loop. Parking along the side road and walking children onto campus will result in ticketing by law enforcement for improper parking.
2. Volunteers - If you are volunteering at the school and arriving in the morning, please park in the eastern parking lot along with our faculty/staff. You may enter as our staff does and go directly to the office to sign in with Mrs. Medley.
3. Parking on Campus - All parking needs to be in parking spaces. No longer may we use the fire lane along the west side (front) of the school. If you are arriving to pick up an ill child, you will need to use a parking space in either the front or back of the school building. Again, no parking is permitted in the fire lane along the front walk.
4. Dismissal - Of course, all dismissal changes must be made in writing. If you have a custody issue, please be sure the school has a recent copy of court documents. Students dismissed by walking with parents must be signed out adjacent to the front office with Mrs. March and Mrs. Evans. Parking along the side roads or at local schools or businesses and walking up to the school to dismiss your child may result in law enforcement issuing a ticket for illegal parking.
Joan Gibbons, Principal
Extended Day - Students cannot be signed out from Extended Day until after our school wide dismissal procedures have concluded at 2:15 p.m. Please contact me if you have any concerns, suggestions, or questions regarding safety. Your continued support to ensure the safety of each student at Hobe Sound Elementary School is greatly appreciated.
WOW! Hobe Sound Elementary recorded the highest number of volunteer hours of any Martin County School - 9,357!! Thank you to all our wonderful parents and community volunteers who give so generously of their time to make our school a success.
Mrs. Gibbons is Proud of Our Audubon Distinction
Over the past sixteen years, Hobe Sound Elementary (HSE) has been promoting environmental education in our school. In 1994, we became the first school in the country to be designated as an Audubon Cooperative School Sanctuary, a program administered by Audubon International in Selkirk, NY. Through the framework of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP), we have been able to successfully incorporate environmental education into our curriculum at HSE.
We have a dedicated Audubon Environmental Committee made up of administration, at least one teacher per grade level, parents and community volunteers. Fourth grade teacher, Mrs. O’Connor is the committee chairperson and volunteers to head up the Nature Know It Alls Club. Mrs. O’Connor was recently recognized by the Keep Martin Beautiful Organization for her dedication to environmental educational.
The HSE Audubon Committee plans numerous activities throughout the school year. Students receive National Geographic nonfiction monthly booklets. They enjoy our school butterfly garden and nature trail. We have morning environmental announcements on our ENN (Eagle News Network), each year, our 3rd through 5th graders participate in the Martin County Audubon’s “My Favorite Florida Bird” essay contest. Students learn about Florida birds by reading many of the Audubon purchased resources. We have winners from HSE every year, and Martin County Audubon is always impressed, not only with the amount of participation, but the level of writing and knowledge our students exhibit in these essays.
If you would like to help continue these supplemental programs, please look for the Walk-a-Thon pledge form and support the efforts of Audubon. This is their only fundraiser of the year.
We are proud of the accomplishments of the Audubon Committee and look forward to many more years of teaching children to love, treasure and protect the environment.

This meeting is entitled “After The Storm: Disaster Awareness.” At this time, the “Dimes for Disaster Campaign” will be introduced. We are also expecting a visit from the ERV (Emergency Response Vehicle). This club helps our students learn leadership skills including communication and decision making. They also learn important safety skills, how to stay safe during disasters and how to be better prepared before disaster strikes. We would like to thank Miss Cathy Balzer (Youth Services Coordinator - American Red Cross) for the time, dedication and effort it takes to organize and implement this important service to our students.
Spring Break is right around the corner and Extended Day will be open every non-school day in April. Spring Break activities will include an Easter egg hunt, an Easter carnival, a field trip to Citrus Grove to enjoy the “DJ Jeff Dance Party,” a gummy worm dissection activity and a field trip to Jensen Beach bowling! Please ask for a Spring Break calendar.
On Thursday, March 23, the Hobe Sound Extended Day Program will welcome John Cesta a local entertainer/magician specializing in walk around/up close interactive programs. He will be presenting “Stand for Something,” a character education assembly program focusing on bullying. We encourage ALL EDP students to attend this program, which will begin at 2:30pm.
A huge “thank you” goes out to Mrs. Janet Church, HSE Writing Coach who is volunteering her time with our third, fourth and fifth grade Extended Day students as they strive to fine tune their math skills! Mrs. Church is working with targeted students on multiplication facts in a fun and creative learning environment.

NATURE KNOW IT ALLS
The Nature Know It Alls are planning a project that promotes student leadership and stewardship within our community through native plant demonstration gardens that will be featured throughout our town. At our last meeting students chose two fifth grade leaders out of the four volunteers who presented why they would be a good representatives for our program. During the next meeting we chose five other leaders to help organize and determine needs of each of the programs. Each group will be responsible for explaining and promoting native plants with one area location. We will video tape and provide CDs to groups that are interested in adding plants to their businesses or homes that once established, require less water.
Once Upon a Lily Pad
A Musical Play for Young Voices
By Mary Donnelly and George L.O. Strid
What’s this? A green frog feeling blue? Froggie has lost all his self-confidence and is feeling miserable. As he wanders around the pond, he finds that all of the other pond creatures have something that he wishes he had. The egrets, the turtles, the fireflies all have their own special talents. But what can he do?
“Once Upon a Lily Pad” is a delightful 30-minute musical for grades 3-5 sponsored by the Martin County Council for the Arts. Featuring seven songs and dialogue, it offers the opportunity to expose our HSE students to vital production aspects like set design, costuming and prop building.
The show will premiere in the HSE auditorium on Saturday May 15th at 6:00 PM, followed by two performances on Wednesday, May 26th during school hours. Songs include: This is the Life For Me; Fly Away; Wings and Feathers, Feathers and Wings; Come Out of Your Shell; Deep Water; Listen To Your Parents; and Let Your Light Shine. Donations will be accepted at the door.

EAGLE BOUTIQUE NEWS
The school “SPRING FLING” is coming up this month on Saturday, March 20th. One of the new attractions that we are going to have this year is an “Adopt-An-Animal” booth where kids can adopt a “stuffed animal,” name it and receive an adoption certificate.
We are asking that parents bring in gently used stuffed animals where they will be groomed and “fluffed” and ready to be loved and adopted by the kids at the Spring Fling! There will be a black bin set out by the car line where you can drop them off or bring them to the office.
Deadline for drop off will be Wednesday, March 17th.
This is yet another reason to clean out your kids closets and bring in gently used school uniforms and stuffed animals! The bin will be available at the Spring Fling for uniform drop off as well.

MEDIA CENTER
Welcome to Windy March!
Our genre for the month is Realistic Fiction. This is just as it sounds, stories that take place in today’s world that could happen, but are made up. Our author this month is Dr. Seuss. His birthday in early March marks Read Across America Day. Green Eggs and Ham turns 50 years old this year. We will have a special reading of this book on March 2nd. Look for our genre and author display outside the library.
I had a nice lunch with those Magic Tree House readers who are completing all the steps necessary to achieve the award. Way to go kids! The next goal is six books and they need to be completed by April 16th.
Other book club news: Third grade club met on the 24th and had a lively discussion on Sign of the Beaver. They will meet again March 23rd when they share their thoughts on George Washington Socks. Fourth Grade club meets on the 25th after reading their choice of The Long Winter or Riding the Flume. Fifth grade will discuss a favorite of mine, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer on March the 30th. This book is part of the Big Read of Martin County. You can pick up adult or child friendly versions of this book for free at the public libraries, banks and such. Then, when you are done, you pass the book along! There are loads of fun activities across the county for the next month or so. Keep your eyes peeled. I just finished the adult version. It was fun to read something that I barely remember from “The Dark Ages!” (Junior high!)
39 Clues club meets on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:30 am. Students who have returned permission slips are welcome to attend. I am getting more copies of the books and several copies are available at the public library. I hope the sleuths are getting on the computer and logging in their clues.
Special “thank you” to some of our volunteers who have really come through for us. Thank you Alex Van Keuren, Bonnie Reiger, Laurie Corry, Karla Smith, Lana Valevski, April Blanco, Melissa Leimer, Flo Bishop and Eve Visar. Having a volunteer here each morning (and afternoon!) has made such a difference in the efficiency of the media department.
Miss Kris was recently in Moscow and will soon be in Guatemala. Her photos and travel log are posted on our blog. Please email me if you would like to follow her on the blog (parrilj@martin.k12.fl.us). There is also a bulletin board near the science lab and art room with pictures of her and her travels. This is a great way for the kids to learn a little geography.
Ms. Abbatiello’s class is participating in a Champions are Readers program sponsored by Pi Beta Phi. They and their parents are enjoying some extra reading activities at home. Whoever completes the month long program will receive a new chapter book and medal.
The district pays for an online encyclopedia named Grolier. Usually you can link it from our website. However, the link is not working for the entire district, so you may access this valuable source from home by: 1. Going to http://go.grolier.com . 2. Enter the username and password below, in all lowercase:

Popular children’s author and Hobe Sound resident, Marianne Berkes will be at Barnes & Noble in Jensen Beach on March 25th, at 7:00 pm, reading her new book about animal migration. If you would like to go and participate in a Reader’s Theater that she will be orchestrating, please contact me for more details.
Congratulations to the Geography Bee winner! After winning here, our winner had to complete a written test that was send on to the National Geographic Society to see if she further qualifies for regional competition.
Don’t forget, kids model what their parents do! Better pick up a book!
AUDUBON COMMITTEE NEWS
Due to a conflict, the Audubon Committee has rescheduled the annual Walk-a-Thon to March 31st.
Funds raised will continue to help develop environmental curriculum for our butterfly garden and new nature trail, as well as ongoing programs and projects such as our educational programs offered to each grade level by the Hobe Sound Nature Center.
Sponsor sheets will be sent home with students in early March, and students are encouraged to ask family members and friends to sponsor them with either a flat donation amount, or a per lap amount. Once the walk-a-thon is over, we will send a copy of the sponsor sheet home with a list of how much your child’s sponsors have pledged. Once sponsor money is collected, please use the envelope we will provide to send donations to school. All donations are tax deductible.
All students will participate in the walk-a-thon during their related arts period. If you are able to volunteer for all or part of the day, please call the school, 772-219-1540 x100, and let Mrs. Medley know what hours you will be available to help. For those who wish to help, but are unavailable, please consider donating small items that can be given to students as additional prizes. Gift cards for video rentals, pizza, etc. make excellent gifts to recognize student participation.
The top three prizes for the most donations collected will be:
1st prize - Nintendo Wii console
2nd prize - IPOD Nano
3rd prize - $50 gift card to Walmart
Hobe Sound Elementary is a unique and special school for many reasons, and our Audubon Committee provides opportunities for students that no other school in Martin County can. Our Committee works to provide hands-on environmental education opportunities year round. We hope to develop a strong environmental ethic with our students; and we believe the best way we can do this is to teach our children by example, as well as by giving them hands on opportunities to protect and enhance the environment.
If you would like to learn more about the Audubon Committee, please consider joining our group. We meet once a month in the afternoon for one hour. This committee has been in place at HSE for over fifteen years. In that time we have impacted thousands of students by teaching them basic environmental education such as respect for the environment, gardening for wildlife, and the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling. We also teaching them about the unique wildlife and habitats that surround us here in Florida.
The Audubon Committee recognizes that these are challenging times in our economy and we are always grateful for the support of our parents and community members. Remember to volunteer on the 31st if you can!
