Audubon Environmental Committee

HSE is one of nine schools across the country to become designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative School Sanctuary through Audubon International, a not for profit organization in Selkirk New York, whose mission is "To improve the quality of life and the environment through research, education and conservation assistance."

Our school has been working toward becoming an environmental theme school for about 10 years now.  Each year brings new and exciting programs and projects for our students.  Some fun things to look forward to this year are:

The HSE Audubon Environmental Committee has developed quarterly themes and this year they will revolve around the last four chapters of our Jr. Master Gardener Program.   Please see the enclosed chart for more information!

We would love to have more parents on our HSE Audubon Committee.  We meet once a month and the dates are listed in this newsletter!

We also would love to have parents that are interested in volunteering in the Science Lab.

You can also check out some of our ongoing environmental projects at the school website.

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please send a note to school and address it to Audubon Committee.  We will be in touch with you to share ways you can help us “Help Save the Environment”.

SCHOOL-WIDE EARTH JOURNALS

Our school prides itself on being the first school in the U.S. to have become a fully certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The work we did in environmental education, energy conservation, wildlife management, and recycling has made an impact upon our students, staff, parents, and community. We are once again a recipient of the Green School Award in environmental education.

The Environmental Eagles Club consists of twenty one responsible, trustworthy, and most importantly environmentally conscious third, fourth, and fifth graders. Mrs. Hanna the science lab teacher, volunteers to be the club leader, who organizes and facilitates the club members as they help take care of HSE. The club members duties are to fill the bird feeders, compost bins (when it is up and running), feed our fish, water our plants, and address any other environmental issues and concerns at HSE throughout the entire school year. All of the students' duties will be completed during school times such as recess time, before school, or whenever the student has free time. We are very proud and thankful for our club members eagerness to beautify and maintain our HSE campus.

This is our beautiful reading garden!

The Audubon committee also sponsors the Science Lab that is in our related arts curriculum.  We are currently stocking several fish tanks, salt and fresh water, and several aquariums that will be touch tanks and other items of interest.
